The
Anchieta Island State Park was created by decree Nr. 9.629 on
March 29, 1977. Nature and history form the scenario of one of
the most important state protected areas. The Anchieta Island
State Park in the county of Ubatuba is managed by the Forestry
Institute, organ of the Environment Agency of the State of
São Paulo.
With an area of 828 acres, the island holds a rich fauna of
the atlantic forest where animals like Capybara, Nail-monkey,
Tamarin, Racoon, Skunk, Lizard, Sloth and Armadillo live in
their original environment. Scientific researches confirmed
the presence of 50 species of native birds.
In the cristalline waters surrounding the island, shoals of
fish like mullet, snook, mackerel, sardine, flying fish and
sea turtles are found in great numbers, protected by a
no-fishing zone . In the State Park it is absolutely forbidden
to camp, fish or angle, retrieve from the shoreline any kind
of flora or fauna, collect seedlings, cut plants, take pets or
open trails through the forest.
Those who are willing may tour the existing trails on the
island. Rugged shorelines surrounded by the Mata Atlantica
lead to the Praia do Sul beach.
The island enchants the visitors with its seven beaches. The
trail of the Prainha is 530 meters long . It connects the Praia
do Presídio beach to the Praia do Engenho, where huge
rocks form a natural pool in the sea. Several forms of marine
life can be seen in its clear waters.
The access to the island is done starting at the Saco
da Ribeira inlet.
Schooner tours starting from the Itaguá
beach are available.
